I built this film to explore fun character interactions in a magical world. The young witch, Thea, is a calm and collected young man. His familiar is a horseshoe crab-like creature named Bubble, who is ridden with anxiety in preparations for his date. Taking a simple thing that many of us have experienced (trying to make a date go well) and exaggerating that buildup before the other person shows up is why making cartoons is fun! I wanted to take inspiration from 2000’s cartoons that have lots of energy, but plenty moments of calm for the characters to breathe and feel more alive. Building a world that feels believable, even through its very abstract or unrealistic settings and scenarios, is why I want to animate at all! That is my goal with animating this film, to bring characters to life and to understand the whole creative process better.
